| This was our second breeding season using the new vaginal AI technique. The results were mixed. Unfortunately our pregnancy take rate was skewed quite a bit by an adult ewe (Pippen) that seemed to have a hard time getting pregnant on the tiny amount of semen that is used for each dose. We also AI'd the lambs, and when you take into account the lower pregnancy rates that ewelambs produce (typically 70%), our take rate amounted to only 40%. But the QUALITY of the lambs that resulted made the whole effort worthwhile! The knowledge of how to inseminate your ewes using semen from a high quality ram from Iceland is very useful in many ways, but it is essential to couple that knowledge with the ability to evaluate your own animals so that you know what weaknesses to compensate for. Essential also is a thorough knowledge of what each ram's statistics mean, which enables you to know who best to breed each ewe to in order to achieve the maximum results. With the further training in Iceland in 2003 on how to evaluate the sheep, and the full story on what the rams statistics actually reveal, my breeding decisions have yielded even more consistently high quality animals, resulting in more lambs sold to happy customers, and fewer culls. This year-in addition to the lambs, we will be selling excellent adults from highly productive lines that we have too many individuals from. The adults that are for sale here are young and vital, with unblemished health and productivity records that would be an asset to ANY flock in North America, but we simply have too many from the families that they represent, or have been on the farm long enough. We strictly adhere to a very high turnover rate which forces wise breeding decisions, as well as helping to reduce maintainance labor time and costs due to having a young and vital flock. The two half-sisters that are for sale (Eowyn and Luthien) are out of a ewe that would rate favorably when compared to the ewes in three of the finest flocks in Iceland that we visited during the 2003 Vaginal AI Seminar. We are also offering for sale the excellent ram "Tolkis" out of a line that has always displayed especially high growth rates, heavy milking abilities, broad structure, and strong, straight well-muscled backs. Tolkis showed such promise as a lamb, in addition to allowing him to be the "teaser" ram for the vaginal AI sessions, we let him go ahead and show us what he is capable of. We weren't disappointed, most of his lambs had excellent conformations. Last but certainly not least, the beautiful semen-station quality ram, Mjaldursson, pictured in the new official ISBONA brochure is available. He will be 2 1/2 years old this fall, and productive for a good long time after that. His price reflects his high quality, and the long breeding career he still has to offer. A milestone achieved...we passed our fifth scrapie inspection, therefore in December of this year we will be a CERTIFIED SCRAPIE-FREE FLOCK! Thank-you for considering Northern Maine Icelandics!
